These enormous leeches from Transylvania are beautifully colored animals. They are also believed to have been the basis of Bram Stoker's Dracula novel, which depicts a count who actually exhibited leech-like behavior and is even seen as a leech disguised in human form.
Some species of this variety grow to be very large and are preferred by some people as pets over smaller varieties because they are easier to care for.
These giant leeches mature after one year and generally live two to three years.
They can survive for up to a year without feeding, and when they do get moving they move more slowly but are much more robust than their smaller relatives.
It is recommended to feed them every 3 to 6 months so they can grow to a considerable size.
Since they don't require much care and feeding, they are considered the perfect pet for those looking to try something different.
They are intelligent creatures, lively and entertaining. They have a mind and personality of their own.
If you are looking for a leech with a distinct personality, we also recommend Buffalo leeches, although they are much more difficult to care for.
If you buy two leeches of this exceptional size and keep them together, they eventually mate in the spring, one may become pregnant and give birth to a leech cocoon full of baby leeches.

Immediately upon arrival, place your leeches in a container of cold water. To do this, use rain or tap water.
